Coalition approves £5,000 electric car subsidy...

The new Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, announced last week that government grants of up to £5,000 will be given to electric car buyers from January next year. Originally planned by the previous Labour government, the 'plug-in car grant' was expected to face the axe as part of the stringent round of budget cuts faced by all departments, but - following pressure from car makers and Britain's green energy industry - it will now run until at least March 2012.
