In article number twelve in our series on London's Low Emission Zone, we look at the enforcement of penalty charges and the grounds for challenging them. If you've driven a vehicle that doesn't meet the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) emissions standards within the boundary of the LEZ and the vehicle is not exempt, has not registered for a 100 per cent discount or has not paid the daily charge, you will receive a warning letter for this first offence.

In the eleventh article in our series on the Low Emission Zone in London, we examine what the penalty charges are and when they are applied. Drivers in the capital's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) in any of the following situations: • The vehicle does not meet the LEZ emissions standards, is not exempt or registered for a 100 per cent discount and the daily charge is not paid by midnight on the next working day following the day of travel • The vehicle should have been registered with Transport for London (TfL) and has not • The daily charge has been paid but the driver provided the incorrect vehicle registration or date of travel when paying, or the driver paid by post and did not allow sufficient time before the date of travel for the payment to clear.

In addition to the 'early adopters' mentioned in previous blogs whose engines meet the new standards for particulate matter, some other types of vehicle are able to avoid the daily LEZ charge despite being, on the face of it, 'too old' or 'too polluting'.

The fourth in our series of blogs on the capital's Low Emission Zone looks at the effect of recent LEZ changes on heavy vehicles. The more stringent rules of the Low Emission Zone , implemented from 3 January 2012, require lorries, buses, coaches and other heavy vehicles to meet the Euro IV standard - rather than the previous Euro III - for particulate matter (PM) in order to drive within the zone without paying a daily charge.
